These days, you need to do more than simply let your local post office know that you’ve moved across the street or across town. Naturally, you’ll want to let your clients, vendors, and suppliers know that you’ll be moving, but there’s more to it than just letting them know when you see them. If you have an email list, send out a blast. Update your website, consider a press release, and be sure to put up signs/posters if you are in an industry where it makes sense to do so. But you shouldn’t stop there! Think about updating your business cards with the new address, change your letterhead and other publicity materials, and make sure you let Google (along with other listing providers) that you are moving. Having search engines send you to your old address is a good way to frustrate your customer-base and wind up losing a chunk of them. Avoid at all costs!
Involve Your Staff
We don’t want to paint with too broad of a brush here, but we think it’s a good idea to involve your staff in the move, on some level. Provide them with the appropriate moving/packing materials they’ll need to easily store their work possessions; tell them to label and/or color-code various equipment to make sure it ends up in the right place. Make sure they have everything they need to make it an easy job, including clear instructions.
Consider Your New Location’s Office Rules
Some office buildings have rules about when moving can take place. For instance, it’s not unheard of for office buildings to only permit moves to happen during non-business hours. This could throw a wrench in your plans if you aren’t prepared for it. That’s why you should definitely reach out to the powers-that-be before the day of the move. If you ask politely and with enough advance, you just might be able to put in a few special requests, such as being able to use the freight elevator, should your new location have one. Utilizing that would help the move go much more smoothly!

The second-to-last tip we’ll be providing in today’s blog has as much to do with cultivating company culture as anything else; have a quick party to usher in the new office! Moving is a big deal, and usually it’s a sign that the business is growing on some level. It can even be something as informal as getting a few treats for an office luncheon.
